Proof of Quality (How Inspections Are Conducted)

To ensure our matcha is grown naturally, we conduct over 100 different tests each year. Only matcha that meets all safety and quality requirements can be certified as organic. Additionally, we undergo strict annual inspections to maintain the highest standards of quality.

Our history

Asuka Ohashi, the founder of WAKABA, was disappointed by the lack of authentic matcha in Germany. Many online retailers sold low-quality products or green powders, falsely marketed as "matcha substitutes."

To change this, Asuka founded WAKABA with a mission to bring genuine Japanese matcha to Germany. By sourcing directly from Japan and following traditional methods, WAKABA ensures every cup reflects the true taste and heritage of Japanese tea.

Recognized as a provider of high-quality matcha in Europe, where some of the world's strictest quality standards apply, WAKABA has gained a strong reputation. In 2024, with the aim of bringing its premium matcha to the Australian market, the company decided to launch sales exclusively online as a first step.

What is matcha? What is the history of matcha?

Matcha is a premium powdered tea grown under shade to protect it from light. As an organic-certified Japanese tea, it is extremely rare, with only 4.5% of tea being cultivated without pesticides. At WAKABA, we import directly from Japan to offer high-quality organic matcha at an affordable price.

Around 800 years ago, tea seeds were imported to Japan from China. Buddhist monks and nobles used matcha for centuries to enhance the effects of medicine or improve focus during zazen meditation. At that time, the tea was not yet as finely powdered as it is today. Over the centuries, through Japanese refinement and innovation, matcha evolved into the form we know now.

Today, matcha is enjoyed worldwide as a sweet treat, a drink ingredient, or an energy booster. However, beware: only Japanese-produced matcha is true matcha.

Passion for tea and traditional craftsmanship

How Our Matcha is Made

  • To boost nutrient content, the tea plants are grown in shade for the last 3–4 weeks before harvest.
  • Stems and veins are removed to enhance flavor and texture.
  • The leaves are ground into an ultra-fine powder using traditional stone mills, preserving their rich nutrients.
  • To prevent oxidation caused by air and light, the matcha is carefully sealed in airtight packaging.

Matcha growing region

WAKABA matcha is crafted in Uji, Japan, a region with over 150 years of tea-making tradition. The tea leaves are carefully selected from Kyoto and Kagoshima and stored at 0°C and 50% humidity to maintain their freshness and flavor. This special storage process allows the leaves to mature, enhancing their rich taste and smooth texture.

The matured leaves are blended by skilled tea masters with years of experience. They create matcha with deep flavor and aroma by balancing the unique qualities of each tea leaf. This process combines tradition and modern techniques to deliver matcha that is more than just a drink it’s a true work of art.

Each cup of WAKABA matcha offers a moment of peace and relaxation. With its rich flavor and delicate aroma, it lets you experience the beauty of Japanese culture and craftsmanship. WAKABA matcha is a gift from tradition, perfect for anyone who loves authentic Japanese tea.
