“I’m a bit nervous about where I might end up, but I’ve got heaps of food, so let’s do it…”
I’m saying this surrounded by glaciated mountains stretching as far as you can see in every direction. In these parts of the Canadian Rockies there are more bears than humans. Rocky spires, glaciers, high hanging valleys, long forested slopes stretching down to lakes, heath, bog, and rivers. Wilderness. At about 11000’ I’m hanging from “dental floss” under a nylon canopy, searching for rising air currents with my paraglider to navigate my way through the mountains. To stay safe and fly far I need to read the weather right and make good decisions - the more skill I have, the less luck I need. When I land I pack my wing into my backpack and continue on foot. I’m completely self-sufficient with overnight gear and food weighing more than my wing - after last nights experience, I’m keen to make sure I land high. Then I can continue my journey hopping from one alpine meadow to another, every day flying past mountains I’ve never even seen before. Vol bivouac - to fly for days through the mountains - is the stuff of dreams.
