An excerpt from this Gareth Bale biography:
In 1989, professional soccer in Wales was at a low ebb. The national team, despite the presence of star names like Ian Rush and Mark Hughes, had not qualified for a major championship for over 30 years. At club level, Cardiff, Swansea, and Wrexham were all struggling in the lower levels of the English league. Newport County would go bankrupt in April of that year, and perhaps Merthyr Tydfil, enjoying a few glorious years in the conference, were the only club genuinely thriving.
Nonetheless, in retrospect, 1989 was a very significant year for Welsh soccer. That is because, in July, a baby was born who would become arguably the greatest Welsh player of all time as well as a global icon. This player would lead his country to a level of success never previously seen in their history. On July 16th in Cardiff, Frank and Debbie Bale, a school caretaker and an operations manager for a law firm, welcomed their second child, a boy they named Gareth.
Gareth Bale’s stellar career has produced many glorious moments, which, despite his quiet personality, have made him famous the world over. In Britain, a 2022 YouGov survey found that he was the third-most-popular current footballer, ahead of even Cristiano Ronaldo. More than 80% of the people surveyed knew who Bale was, and considerably more than half of those surveyed had a positive view of him. Significantly, only 7% of people surveyed had a negative opinion of him. As of May 2023, he had over 50 million followers on Instagram and more than 19 million on Twitter.
