Glycine is an amino acid with a number of important functions in the body. Glycine acts as a neurotransmitter, a component of collagen, and as a precursor to various biomolecules (e.g., creatine & heme). It can improve sleep quality and human growth hormone release (Yamadera et al. 2007 & Kasai et al. 1978).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Glycine do?
Glycine plays an essential role in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Glycine ingestion before bedtime significantly improves sleep quality in people most likely as a result of activating the NMDA receptor in the brain (Yamadera et al. 2007).
It can also bind to vitamins and minerals, aiding in nutrient uptake (Wapnir et al. 1983). Furthermore, there is evidence that glycine can help upregualte human growth hormone (Kasai et al. 1978)!
Is Glycine safe?
Yes, glycine supplementation is well tolerated without major adverse effects in a study involving 10 adults supplementing with 15 grams per day (El-Hafidi et al. 2018). Other clinical trials have safely used doses of 0.8 g/kg for five years (Cleveland et al. 2009)!
Gastric discomfort may occur on large doses on an empty stomach. If this occurs, try consumption over several smaller doses and with food!
How do I use it?
We recommend consuming 3-5g of glycine daily. This can be taken in a single dose before bed or spread across the afternoon. If gastric discomfort occurs, consume with food. Yes, this product is great for women as well!
I heard Glycine pairs well with NAC?
Yes! There is some really cool science coming out that glycine pairs really well with N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) to provide a syngeristic supplement. For example, glycine and NAC supplementation improves glutathione deficiency, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, genotoxicity, muscle strength, and cognition related to aging (Kumar et al. 2021)!
