The presence of the alkaloid N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in beverages used in religious contexts around the world, such as ayahuasca, has attracted growing attention from the scientific community due to its possible anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, and has been known for decades due to its psychoactive capacity. In Brazil, where it goes by the name jurema preta, the plant Mimosa hostilis is commonly used to produce DMT for recreational purposes. Five different organic solvents (n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, dichloromethane, and chloroform) were tested to see if they could extract non-purified DMT from M. hostilis, and the results were compared in terms of the concentration of DMT in each of the solvents.
