The city of Bundi in Rajasthan is known for its iconic fort, the Bundi School of Painting, and its water structures (baolis or stepwells and kunds or tanks). With patronage from various rulers over the past four hundred years, the baolis and kunds are a unique building typology that showcases in-depth traditional knowledge of the water harvesting system in this arid region. Today, with the advancement of piped water supply, these have lost their importance and are being neglected. In 2013-14, INTACH undertook an initiative to identify and document this lost heritage, wherein 48 baolis and 10 kunds were found to have survived. The book traces the historical context, architecture, and use of this region-specific building typology and assesses the related current issues besides the mapping and inventory of these 58 structures. The book also includes the conservation and revival of the 17th century Bhawaldi Baoli that INTACH successfully undertook in 2012.
