Cutting on the pull stroke: Pulling, rather than pushing the saw through the wood, puts tension on the blade and makes it less likely to bend. Pull stroke blades tend to be thinner than push stroke blades and leave a smaller kerf (width of cut). These blades make faster, easier, cleaner cuts with finer control and less waste and less clogging yet can still rip and crosscut. A pull saw is easier to steer. This can be useful because once a cut is started, it stays in a straight line.

Cutting on the push stroke: A push saw may be preferred for more forceful cutting and for dovetails because sawdust is pushed out the other side of the cut so that the markings are not obscured –while a pull saw may pull sawdust toward you.
