“Emily had at last found her place, and had escaped from the torture of strange, complex modern life.”
The White Peacock is the first novel by D. H. Lawrence, published in 1911. The novel reflects the author's interest in the inner lives of his characters and his exploration of psychological landscapes, so prominent in his later works. The story involves failing marriages, giving insight into his later novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, with the introduction of a gamekeeper.
Sneak Peek
“As they danced together, Lettie and Emily, they showed in striking contrast. My sister’s ease and beautiful poetic movement was exquisite; the other could not control her movements, but repeated the same error again and again. She gripped Lettie’s hand fiercely, and glanced up with eyes full of humiliation and terror of her continued failure, and passionate, trembling, hopeless desire to succeed.”
Synopsis
Cyril Beardsall’s sister Laetitia (Lettie) is entangled in a
romantic triangle with two young men, George and Leslie Temple, in the imaginary town of Nethermere. Despite having an l attraction to George, Lettie finally marries Leslie, and pushes George to marry the more traditional Meg.
Set against the backdrop of the
idyllic countryside, Lawrence explores the intricacies of relationships, societal expectations, and the human psyche. The novel delves into the emotional and psychological depths of its characters as they navigate love, desire, and the constraints of Edwardian society.
As the book comes to a finish, George's descent into alcoholism causes both his and Lettie's marriages to end in discontent.
