The Chashaku was crafted for the sole purpose of being used in the tea ceremony, which makes this tool truly special; the word “Chashaku” actually means “tea scoop”. It was initially created in China from various materials like metal or ivory, but it soon became an essential element of the Japanese tea ceremony and form that point in time only wooden chashaku scoops were crafted. The matcha tea scoop is necessary if you want to prepare match tea the proper way and make sure you have added the just the right amount of powder. This small and delicate tool is in fact truly important and cannot be replaced so easily. And if it is replaced, no other tool can grand you the same results: think about the difference mixing your matcha with a chasen can make! You cannot get the same result if you mix it with any other instrument. Even the smallest teaspoon is too wide to replace a chashaku.
