As usual with ALTRA the Lone Peak 9+ is also a so-called barefoot shoe. Barefoot shoes are characterised by a so-called drop of 0 mm. Drop refers to the height difference between the forefoot and heel. In most common shoes, we stand higher with the heel above the ground than with the forefoot. With barefoot shoes, there is no such difference in height, as when we are barefoot on the ground, we also stand equally above the ground with any area of the foot.
Newcomers in the area of barefoot shoes should start slowly and with short distances, as the 0 mm drop makes the heel lower than in most shoes where we are otherwise on the go. This means that the calf muscles are more stressed, which can initially lead to muscle soreness. In the long run, barefoot shoes are super healthy for our feet because they not only train our calf muscles, but also the foot muscles, as thanks to the thin sole and the direct running feel, the feet have to compensate for much more unevenness.
