# 1: Logo mark

The CROQUIS logo mark was invented by the designer, Susumu Tada. When the CROQUIS series first released in 1970, artists used them mainly for their paintings. This CROQUIS logo mark was designed with the hope that it would become more recognized by a larger population of illustrators and designers.

Although simple, created with only a compass and a ruler, this sophisticated logo has become a household symbol.

#2: Design on the spine

Susumu Tada also put his design on the spine of the CROQUIS wire-bound books. At the time, no other wire-bound books had such an eye-catching look, especially when lined up in the bookshelf. The well-known circular pattern on the spine matches the CROQUIS logo mark on the cover. It was such an innovative idea at that time.

#3: Durable but flexible cover

CROQUIS book cover is durable yet flexible enough to roll up. The idea of this type of cover came from a cardboard carrying case for a 6-pack bottled beverage. During one of Maruman president’s business trips, back 50 plus years ago, he and his team saw these cardboard beverage carrying cases and were impressed by its strength. Quality cardboard that is durable and won’t collapse, but is also flexible and can be rolled up was the perfect cover for Maruman’s CROQUIS wire-bound books.

#4: SC binding, a unique book binding system

Each sketch pad features a unique spiral bound system called SC binding. The continuous cover hides the coil loops inside the spine to give a stylish slimmed look. It also protects the wire from getting tangled or hooked.
