Mozart's special affection to the clarinet found a special expression in one of his last works, the concert in A major. Sabine Meyer plays it, as intended by the composer, on the deeper tuned baset clarinet. "The music is as simple, as light and makes emotionally look as deep - as a religion," she said. Like the quintet KV 581, the clarinet concert was originally written for basset clarinet, a now outdated instrument that Stadler had specifically designed with an extended lower register. Although the autograph score is lost (the earliest edition preserved is an edit for standard 19th century clarinet), many modern clarinetists have employed guesses on how Mozart originally wrote the clarinet part. One of the first to explore the concert on a modern reconstruction of a basset clarinet was Sabine Meyer. The successful career of the Meyer born in Germany as a soloist and chamber musician has always been in the sign of Mozart. Now her recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the State Chapel Dresden appears under Hans Vonk on LP.
