Memoir of a Labor Man:: Australian Soldier, Union Leader, Industrial Arbitrator and Sporting Sailor
Memoir of a Labor Man:: Australian Soldier, Union Leader, Industrial Arbitrator and Sporting Sailor
This memoir provides a composite portrait of a not-quite-ordinary man called Graham Lytton Walker and his circle of influential family and friends through the political and industrial history of 20th century Australia. It includes his childhood imaginative experiences through the Depression, and personal recollections of his WWII service in the Pacific theatre, both areas less often addressed elsewhere. Based predominantly on his vivid hand-written memories and personal family interviews, we read an eye-witness account from the thirties onwards that demonstrates the political and social forces and the environment through which he lived and eventually worked. His political ideas were formed through significant relationships and evolved through decades of being at the coalface of industrial disputation and arbitration. His guiding ethos was always a fair go for workers, which included striving successfully for equal pay to women doing equal work.
