This was pianist Mal Waldron's last known recording, completed in two days in October 2001, the year before his death. Waldron's work was chiefly in hard bop, postbop and free jazz, and he was also known for his distinctive voicings and adaptable style inspired by Monk. He's also closely associated in history with Billie Holiday. Saxophonist David Murray's oeuvre is impressive both from a 'cutting edge' standpoint and for its regards for the past. After recording with Elvin Jones, Cedar Walton and Pharoah Sanders, this recording a blend of originals ans standards is another great Murray collaboration with a jazz elder. It's also very unforced. As Waldron too had one foot in the past and the other in the avant garde.
