In 2008, I published a book called “The Story Behind a Massacre”. I was naïve in what I had read and heard and after nine years of investigating, thought I had found the truth about this tragedy that occurred 28th April 1996 at Port Arthur in Tasmania. It shocked Australia and sent ripples around the world that something on this scale could happen in Australia, known as “The Lucky Country”, let alone the island state of Tasmania. Gun laws in Australia were not that strict and for passing a National Gun Law some states voted against it. There was a quote made by the Premier of NSW in 1987 and again in 1995 and it again quoted in early 1996, “There will not be any change to gun laws, until there is a massacre in Tasmania, the likes you have not seen in Strathfield or Hoddle Street, unless we get National Gun Laws”. On that fateful day 28th April 1996, that statement came true, when a man by the name of Martin Bryant who has an IQ of 66 (equal to an 11-year-old) and is serving 1,652 years in gaol for the murder of 35 people and injuring 23 others. The way this whole saga went down was so well planned and yet someone with such a low intelligence could carry out this heinous act leads one to ask the questions. The terror that was let loose in the picturesque historical settlement of Port Arthur, was to be the worst and still is the largest mass shooting in Australian history. In this follow up to the original book, where I raised a lot of questions, which I unfortunately had no answers to most of them. The investigation became stagnant and 28 years later, I still have doubts as to the full truth. Relying on newspaper clippings, interviews with media personnel and gaining access to documents and photographs which were unavailable at the time in 2008, I have in this book asked the same fifty questions I set out in the first book, plus raised a few more, but have been able to gain more in-depth information as well as verifying a lot more of the rumours and innuendos that were circulating. Psychiatric reports, reports of the effects on staff at the Port Arthur Historical Site, The Royal Hobart Hospital all on that day and the aftermath effects it had on those poor souls. Also, there are further documents and more recent newspaper articles which the narrative is a little misleading in areas when you compare them to the statements and testimonies of eyewitnesses. It is still a horror story and coming up to the 30th Anniversary of the Massacre, we ask will the government of the day release the full array documents that were sealed in 1996?
