The Retinol Problem & Why KAASHI's 1% Retinol is Different

Retinol is one of the most researched and scientifically backed skincare ingredients, with proven results over time for improving skin health and appearance.

Not all Retinol is the same and it is important to understand what you are purchasing:

  • Many retinol serums don’t disclose the percentage: Many retinol products don’t list a percentage because brands often use weaker vitamin A forms (Retinyl palmitate, Retinyl propionate, Retinyl acetate, HPR / Granactive Retinoid), very small amounts or rely on vague marketing terms instead of being transparent. E.g. 1% retinyl palmitate” sounds strong but is very weak.
  • Stability & formulation issues: Pure retinol is highly unstable (degrades with light, heat, oxygen) and very difficult to formulate without irritation. Many brands use very low amounts (0.1–0.3%). If the % were shown, many products would look underwhelming.
  • Marketing flexibility: “Retinol” has become a buzzword. A product can legally say “with retinol” even at trace amounts.

A retinol product is worth the value if it clearly explains what type of retinoid it uses, places it reasonably high in the ingredient list, includes calming and barrier-supporting ingredients, and comes in opaque, airtight packaging to keep it stable.
