This book is part of the Aviation Ancestry \"British Aircraft Industry Adverts 1909-1980\" series of compilations and covers Rolls-Royce Aero Engine Advertisements from 1917 to 1949.
These compilations are designed as works of reference to catalogue and illustrate the press adverts for the subject company and will augment rather than replace other sources of company history,
The adverts are displayed in chronological order, without additional narrative. Each image is annotated with its source and date, thus creating a comprehensive timeline of the company's publicity and marketing output. (Each image has a unique reference number (Ad Ref) which corresponds to the record number in the Aviation Ancestry master database.)
Due to the cost of production all images are printed in black and white (grayscale), which in most cases was the original format.
The development of aero engines has generally been a slower process that the design and construction of airframes. As Rolls-Royce stated in their early adverts \"The future of flying depends on reliability.\" Achieving this requires engineering and materials expertise of the highest order.
Furthermore aero engines of a given horsepower would be used by many different aircraft constructors or in times of conflict in great quantities by friendly nations, some of which may be granted licences to build them. Also, aero engines should be capable of continuous development to satisfy increasingly demanding requirements.
Rolls-Royce aero engines, like their cars have always proved to be reliable, and this feature is regularly stated in their early adverts. The slogan \"Rolls-Royce aero engines are the best in the world\", changed in 1931 to \"Rolls Royce Aero Engines \"For Speed And Reliability.\"
Rolls Royce emphasised liquid cooling and and small frontal area in their adverts, and for the technically minded the 1930s series of \"Advantages\" adverts will prove interesting.
This volume covers all their piston engines from the Eagle and into the jet age with the \"River Class\" gas turbines such as the Derwent and the Nene.
Finally there's a small supplement featuring WW1 surplus Rolls-Royce aero engines for sale by the Aircraft Disposal Company.
In this volume the adverts really do tell the story!
