WHY CATS SCRATCH?

  • Cats scratch to mark their territory, both visibly and invisibly, and to serve as an emotional outlet. Scratching is essential for your cat’s physical and emotional health. It helps your cat stretch, release pent up energy, reduce stress, and shed loose layers from her claws keeping them in proper shape.
  • Cats love sisal fabric for scratching. Corrugated cardboard is also good but messier and creates some potential health risks for your cats (toxic chemicals in cardboard glue, risk of gut obstruction if cardboard particles are swallowed).
  • Around 60% of cats prefer scratching posts to mats. However, there is scientific evidence that cats tend to scratch more vertically when they feel threatened or stressed. Scratching horizontal surfaces usually indicates that your cat is comfortable and relaxed.
  • As a caring cat lover, you will please your cat by giving her both a sisal scratching mat (optimum dimensions 60cm x 40cm) and a sisal-covered vertical scratcher post (optimum height not less than 80cm). Ensure the post is not only tall but rigid as cats need resistance when they scratch at full stretch.
  • If your cat leaves scratch marks up and down a door jamb, window frame, sofa, carpet, or chair, this means your cat is nervous or unhappy and is trying to increase her comfort level.
  • If you have multiple cats, so they don’t fight or grow stressed over lack of resources, provide cat scratching surfaces in all areas of your home.
  • If your cat refuses to scratch a post or a scratching mat, the most likely reason is that you have placed your scratching mat or post in out-of-the-way spots.
  • So, where do you put a cat scratcher? Top spots include near the window, bed, or litter tray, near the sofa. As you may know, cats use scratching posts or mats to show others their territory, so place scratching mats and posts in high-traffic areas of your home.
  • Don’t assume, though, that simply setting up a cat scratching mat or a scratching post will keep your cat from scratching your furniture. You have to lure your feline companion to scratch the mat or post by putting catnip on it, or a treat at the top.
