The show has been on the road, performing the repertoire of Billie Holiday since 1987, for two years longer than Billie did herself. The album is a live recording made at the 2015 Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival, headlining the celebrations of Billie Holiday's centenary to a sell-out audience.Fronted by Val Wiseman, one of the best ever British jazz singers [Jazz: The Essential Companion], the elite band features many several times British Jazz Award winners, Digby Fairweather, Roy Williams, Julian Stringle, Brian Dee, Len Skeat and Eric Ford one of the best swing bands in Europe today [Jazz FM].The album is released in the year of Billie Holiday's 101st birthday and the show will be on tour throughout 2016 with a UK leg of 24 performances. Dave Gelly, jazz writer for The Observer and The Guardian and author of jazz books commented: This, the second album by Lady Sings The Blues, inspired by Billie Holiday, is performed with unbuttoned swing, sometimes even surpassing the originals. The sheer variety contained in these songs shows off Billie's expressive range better than any learned article.
