The man who wanted to see it all
What is it like to be on the go for the entire adult life? Heinz pieces from Hövelhof have experienced it. He was 22 years old when he left his East Westphalian home village with packed saddle bags and 73 when he first returned. The incredible story of a nomadic life.
For 51 years, Heinz cycled pieces through the world. He covered a fabulous 648,000 kilometres and saw all 196 countries of this earth. With 18 pieces surround the Mediterranean, hires as a sailor on a ship and secretly goes ashore on the Russian coast to cycle to Moscow and Vladivostok. Again and again he is arrested by the militia and sent on a train towards the West, but again and again he gets out and drives his own way through the Soviet Union.
Back in Hövelhof, pieces sums up a plan: before a girl gets him and he gets sedentary, he wants to travel to the Olympics in Tokyo. By bike, of course. It's 1962 and he's got two years of adventure ahead of him. Upon his departure, pieces has $300 in his luggage and is so careful with his expenses that he gets by on less than $1 a day. In Ethiopia, however, he is as good as broke as Haile Selassie, the emperor of Abssinia, invites him to himself and gives him 500 US dollars. A fortune. It allows new destinations: in Cape Town, he rolled his bike on the ferry and transferred to Brazil for the first time.
These and many other stories Heinz pieces have told in long conversations with author Carina Wolfram, a book about an almost incredible life on the go.
- The book contains numerous photographs of Heinz pieces from over 50 years of world travel.
- Current Netflix documentary about Heinz pieces: "The man who wanted to see it all"
- With a foreword by Dennis Kailing - known from the Netflix documentary "Better World than Never"
Over 50 years of cycling around the world
Already to Africa, Heinz pieces gave lectures in German clubs. In South America there are even more German immigrants and he becomes a professional in it: playing football, drinking beer and giving a lecture. He tells countless times about his experiences. He is constantly invited to eat and the hosts are thrilled. Homesickness he has less and less. On the contrary, the longer he is on the go, the greater the fear of a lifestyle that trusts most of us but is completely foreign to it. And so pieces always find new reasons not to return home.
It is only at retirement age that he returns to his hometown and lives on the tales of his story and his project to realize a museum about his life. He will probably no longer do the latter, but the Netflix documentation "The Man Who wanted to see it all" has helped him a certain fame since autumn 2022 in Germany.
The book about a fascinating resume will delight anyone who wanderlust lures.
