Paper Skin
Paper Skin
Their debut EP Here I Am has sold out of its first pressing and it was a good introduction to this Gold Coast group. Since then, Lump have gone from strength to strength with a win in the Australian Series of the World Battle Of The Bands 2004 that would see them take the stage on the World Final in Auckland New Zealand that unfortunately didn't lead to a victory. However, this five piece boasting members of Tower, The Poor, Black Seed and High Speed Reason have returned with their first long player titled Paper Skin. From the getgo, Heart Of Innocence signals all intentions. Straight forward rock riffs with hard edged vocals are the order of the day with Paper Skin. Face Me You and Friends showcase Skenie's vocals in the vein of Chris Cornell Audioslave, exSoundgarden with a solid sounding inyourface rock rhythm section providing all the backup needed. The title track's subtle intro soon leads into a more convincing rhythm that allows Skenie's to flex his vocal muscle across the varying moods of the track. An almost Sonic Youth type effects intro to Box In The Hole eventually moves into a contagiously overflowing rock 'n' roll groove which continues during We Wait For NoOne. An infectious rhythmic intro to Wash My Hands sets the scene for the entire track throughout it's subtle changes in feel and timing. Who Follows You has an almost Alice In Chains like feel to it which is indicative of other parts of the album and the album closer Good Evening Mr. Night offers up the most diverse and interesting feel across the entire album with its laid back, relaxing feel. From straight forward rock through to a more relaxed sound, Lump have produced a decent followup to their debut EP that further showcases what these guys are capable of. It seems however that true diversity is really shown with the final track, and a couple of more tracks along those lines would certainly do wonders for this release. They don't have to be in the same vein, but it seems that Paper Skin needs a little more variety along the way. But, if straight ahead rock along the lines of the diversity of early Alice In Chains and Soundgarden is your thing, then Paper Skin would be a worthy addition to your collection.
